A lot of developers bought MacBook Air 16 GB models to do development and were happy with it but bought it more as a bridge machine to the MacBook Pros. I think that a lot of them have or are upgrading to the MacBook Pro models for the larger screen and availability of more RAM. There are fairly big shortages of the MacBook Pro models now.

Apple decided to only go with 1 NAND chip for the 256GB model which has resulted in slower SSD speeds compared to the M1 base model which has 2 NAND chips (128GB each). Based on my budget, should I upgrade the RAM from 8GB to 16GB OR should I opt to keep the 8GB RAM and upgrade the SSD to 512GB so I get 2 NAND chips (256GB each).

This is the main reason. 512 obvs has double the storage, and 256 is on the low end for most nowadays.

I has 8 CPU / 8 GPU same as the MacPro so not only do you get 256g more, you get an upgrade in GPU processing. Do you want to travel with a USB drive, thumb or external and money is tight? Yes, go with the 256. That’s the only way I see making your decision.

Judging by this video which compares the Intel MacBook SSD writes vs 11.2.3 writes vs. 11.4 writes, the issue was helped, but is still very prevalent. For example, reducing Lightroom Classic writes from 90x more data written than Intel vs 50x more data written, and Final Cut from 36x more data written to 20x.
